Schedule Change Policy

Our goal at Woodbury Middle School is to provide an academic environment that meets the needs of all students. We focus on preparing our students for the challenges of their education and career. Students gain much from books and lectures but the educational process includes far more than that; students also gain valuable insight and maturity from interacting with different people and adjusting to a variety of teachers. We expect our students and teachers to resolve personality conflicts in a mature, respectful manner. Students and teachers must take responsibility to meet and work through problems or seek additional help when needed.

Changes to a student’s schedule create an impact on many other classes, and therefore will be made on a limited basis only. The following guidelines for making schedule changes have been established:

  1. Parent will contact his/her student’s teacher to arrange a parent-teacher-student conference to resolve the concerning issue.
  2. Parent will contact his/her student’s counselor to review and discuss the reason for the schedule change request if the issue is not directly resolved with the teacher. The counselor and parent will discuss the student’s past academic history, absences, parent/teacher contacts and the use of help sessions and/or other interventions.
  3. If a parent has not done so, a parent must turn in a written request to the curriculum administrator, providing a detailed explanation for the requested schedule change.
  4. Thereafter, a student-teacher-administrator-parent conference will be held. Options to be discussed at this conference include:
  • Developing a plan for the improvement of the student’s performance that includes, student attendance, student effort, alternative instructional strategies, student utilization of help sessions or other interventions, and specific target dates for progress; and/or
  • Exiting the student from the course and placing them in a different course.

Unless there are extenuating circumstances that have been approved by the administration, schedule changes, if any, will be made at the term/semester breaks - and are at the complete discretion of school administration.
Schedule changes will not be made for the following reasons:

  • Student does not like the teacher
  • Student wants to be with friends
  • Student wants a different lunch
  • Teacher gives too much work
  • Student wants to change class because he/she does not want to do the class work or has not done the reading/required work.
  • Student is not making an “A” or “B” or is failing the class

Students may not change from one teacher to another teacher in the same subject area unless there are extenuating circumstances that have been examined in a parent-teacher-administration conference. No schedule changes will be made the first 10 days of school unless there is an error on our part.
